Gophers eat plants so our nicely irrigated and maintained yards are a perfect food source for them. You will find the majority of gophers in large open spaces so if you live close to some of the parks or preserves in Cupertino you are more likely to find these little critters invading your property. This is because during the warmer months these open spaces tend to dry out and become less habitable for the gophers so they move out in search of new sources of food.
Unfortunately, yes. Moles make extremely long, elaborate tunnel systems which can make it the ground feel squishy or unstable as you walk over it. These tunnels can damage the roots of the grass which can lead to declining or dead patches as well. Their tunneling can provide some aeration to the lawn which is beneficial but by turning up the soil they can also provide new environments for weeds to grow in.
