Los Gatos is known for some beautiful vineyards and parks, making it a great place to live or visit. These luscious environments also provide perfect homes for irritating pests like gophers, moles, and voles. These critters will often make their way into our nice maintained yards in search of food so let our technicians help you defend your plants and landscapes!

Gopher Control

Key signs of a gopher:

  • Crescent-shaped mounds (they push dirt out at an angle so there will usually be more dirt on one side than the other)
  • Plants being eaten at the root or fully disappearing

Mole Control

Key signs of a mole:

  • Like gophers, moles leave behind pile of dirt as they dig their tunnels but mole piles will be more hill-shaped (they bulldoze through the soil rather the kicking dirt out of an opening)
  • Moles do not eat plants so you won’t usually see plants being impacted by mole activity but they can damage your lawn with their digging

Vole Control

Key signs of voles:

  • Small, open holes with no raised dirt (voles are not good diggers so they usually take over old gopher/mole tunnels)
  • Chewed down trails in the grass or chewed up bases of plants (voles will even strip bark off of trees sometimes)

FAQs

Are gophers more common in hillside properties around Los Gatos?

Yes, if you are near any open space like hills you are more likely to encounter gopher activity. These open spaces are ideal settings for gophers to feed and reproduce so they will often move into nearby properties in search of more food or to create their own little territories.

What are the differences between gopher and mole damage?

As you can see in the pictures above, gopher and mole damage does look quite similar. It can be hard to tell the difference if you’re not familiar with these critters. The biggest difference is going to be the shape and texture of the mounds. Gopher mounds are going to typically be made up of finer dirt and will usually be somewhat crescent shaped (more dirt is pushed off to one side). Mole mounds are going to be chunkier dirt and more volcanic or hill shaped. Moles will also often dig along the sides of hard surfaces (pavers, sidewalks, etc) and leave little clusters of dirt along the length of the surface.

Is professional control more effective than DIY methods?

Plenty of people find success with DIY methods but we often get calls from people who have exhausted all the typical DIY options and just can’t get rid of these critters. Our entire business is about catching and baiting these animals so our technicians are experts in their field. Trained professionals are going to know more about gophers, moles, and voles than your average person so that means they are typically more effective at actually getting results.
