San Jose has quickly become a major hub of technology in California but it is still home to many acres of parks! This blend of modernity and nature makes it an enticing place to live for humans and critters alike. Left unchecked critters like gophers, moles, and voles can cause a lot of damage to our nice yards and gardens. Reach out to us if you’re seeing mounds of dirt or small open holes so that our expert technicians can help!
Gophers mounds are the most common complaint that we get, you can recognize them by their horseshoe/crescent shape. Gophers push dirt out of their tunnels at an angle which results in that unique shape. You will also often see plants declining or complete plant loss around your property if you have gophers.
Mole mounds can look similar to gopher mounds, especially if you’re not an expert. There are a few key differences though! Moles bulldoze through soil and push the dirt directly up and out so their mounds will be more evenly spread than gophers’. The texture of the dirt will also be chunkier. You also will often see smaller mounds going right along the edge of hard barriers like bender boards or sidewalks.
Voles get confused with the other two critters we manage but their activity looks very different. They do not make dirt piles at all, this is because they just aren’t very good at digging. They are small mice so instead of digging they chew little holes in the soil. They also chew down trails in the grass and around the base of plants.

Gophers are native to the area so they are unfortunately common all over California. While San Jose is pretty well known for being an urban tech city there are stills parks and other green spaces where gophers and other wildlife can thrive. Once gophers find an area with a good food source they will usually stay nearby so it’s not uncommon for these critters to move between neighboring properties.
Yes, since moles dig vast tunnel systems it’s very possible for them to disrupt underground irrigation lines. They won’t chew through them like gophers sometimes do but they can’t see very much so they just blindly bulldoze through the soil. We haven’t had too many instances of moles really damaging irrigation or other underground systems though.
