Sunnyvale is known for being home to some major tech companies and has a long history of innovation and aerospace. Despite the technological advances this city still tries to maintain focus on keeping spaces open for recreation and community. Its hundreds of acres of parks are a perfect habitat for unfortunately destructive critters like gophers, moles, and voles. You may notice activity from these critters in your landscape throughout the year. We’re here to help!
Gophers are usually the most common critter most homeowners run into. They are native to California so you can find them all over the place. They create elaborate underground tunnels so it’s even common to find them in regular suburban neighborhoods. Gophers are also quite territorial so they don’t want to share their tunnels with each other which means they will spread out to find their own territory. If you are seeing pushed up mounds and plant loss then you most likely have a gopher!
Moles are similar to gophers in that they are burrowing pests that create huge underground tunnels. However, mole activity does look a little different. Mole mounds are usually more hill-shaped and are often found either in grass or along the hard edges of things like sidewalks, pavers, or bender boards. Moles are also very territorial and they create even larger territories than gophers do so they can move between the front and back of a property or even between neighboring properties!
Voles are often confused with moles and gophers but they are a totally different critter! Voles are meadow mice and they are not good diggers like the other two main pests we take care of. If you just have voles you will not see any pushed up piles of dirt, instead, you will see small open holes – usually in the grass or near denser ground cover. Voles are also not territorial like gophers and moles so that means you will usually have a group of them active on your property.

Gophers come into our lawns and landscapes in search of food. They are herbivores so they want to eat our plant material. Gophers are especially fond of our roses and tomato plants! You’ll most often see gopher activity pop up in your Sunnyvale yards during spring and summer because of the boom in gopher populations after breeding season and because their usual food sources in nearby open space have dried out.
Yes, just like gophers voles are native to Northern America so there are found all over California, including cities like Sunnyvale. Customers don’t reach out for vole activity as often as they do for gopher activity though. They often live in dense ground cover so they can be more difficult to see unless they start venturing out into your lawn. The little open holes they leave behind are much more obvious in well manicured grass.
