Preventing Grub Damage

May 15, 2025

What Does Grub Damage Look Like?

The damage from the grubs themselves will cause dry, yellow spots throughout the lawn. This is because they will eat away at the thatch layer of the lawn causing the surface areas to die.

Another easily identifiable sign of grub damage is the ability to peel up the lawn like a carpet.

During the late summer/early fall you can also see the grubs themselves in the soil.

What Can You Do?

Luckily there are preventative treatments for grubs!

The most common treatment is a granular insecticide that is sprinkled over the lawn areas. Most products have the same active ingredient that is found in flea and tick medicines for our pets!

If you want to DIY you can buy these products online or at most home supply stores.

Our horticulture team also offers treatments for grubs as part of our Lawn Care Program!

Damage From Other Critters

Unfortunately grubs are food source for a few animals – most commonly raccoons, boars, and moles. If any of these animals have found food at your property before there is a chance they will come back to check in following years. There’s no 100% guaranteed way to prevent this from happening but there are some ways to either deter or control these animals from damaging your property!

Raccoons are somewhat easily deterred by fruit tree netting, you just secure it over the lawn areas you want protected. This works because raccoons have very sensitive paws and they dislike the feeling of the netting.

Boars are trickier but sturdy, tall fences are usually sufficient to prevent them from getting into your yard.

Moles can’t really be prevented but we do offer a trapping service to take care of them if you see their mounds appear.
